The universal questions Is there a God? Why are we here? Is there really life after death?

These questions are addressed and answered in Ed Buhrer’s latest novel, POP’S PLACE. In the contemporary setting of a sub shop at the New Jersey shore, a cast of characters acts out a daily ritual of humor and verbal by-play in which they also unravel some of life’s lesser mysteries vanilla or chocolate? Yankees or Mets? Dogs or cats? Summer or winter? Mustard or ketchup? Is God male or female?
POP’S PLACE is narrated by and observed through the eyes of Tim, a Guardian Angel…but there are other angels, as well, all who have specific jobs to do in their Second Lives. As Tim tells us, those who lead good lives on Earth are given a Second Life by God; those who do not live good lives are not punished, as some texts and doctrines would insist. “God does not punish, God only creates and rewards,” Tim reveals, “Those who are evil or selfish or incapable of compassion, those who do not use the life that God has given them wisely, they simply go into the ground and rot.”
The rest become angels Mentors, Guardians, Seekers, Teachers, Healers…and Avengers.
As POP’S PLACE unfolds, readers are introduced to Tim’s purpose, to “guard” and protect Mike, a Vietnam veteran and the compassionate but haunted owner of the sub shop; the reader is also introduced to a diverse cast of regulars, reminiscent of the ensemble from the popular television show, CHEERS Lenny, Nick, and Richie, Mike’s assistants; Hugo, a retiree who sits in the shop each day, reading offbeat news items from the Asbury Park newspaper; Nikki, a girl with a tragic secret; Rona, a local realtor with little conscience; Carl, the town cop who doesn’t like anyone and for whom the feeling is mutual; Dirt and Snoopy, two hopeless nitwits who work in the local surf shop for Asian-Indian brothers who know nothing about surfing but a little too much about heroin. And then there are the customers. And the food…with side orders of compassion, humor, sudden death, loyalty, and daily routines played out against the backdrop of the sounds and aromas of the Jersey Shore. As the story progresses and elements of The Mob appear, readers are also shown exactly what an Avenging Angel does. The entire novel takes place in the sub shop and across the street on the boardwalk, where Tim and Mike sip their coffee and watch the dawn arrive each morning.
By the time readers turn the final page, POP’S PLACE will have inspired them to consider the quality of their own lives, the possibility of an afterlife and what that might bring as the novel resonates with readers and reflects their private thoughts and fears.
