"Jane, if you really want to make a difference in the world, you ought to focus on conflict resolution and citizen-led change." This was the advice that Nelson Mandela gave the author when she spent a day with him in 2000. Mandela's words became a dramatic turning point in her life as she embraced his advice and embarked on a journey to who she is now, a global advocate for women's and girls' human rights. The book starts with a broad sweep of the author's childhood and teenage years and pivotal influences during that time. It quickly moves through the territory of her university study, early career and scholarship positions, as well as travel experiences and people that had a defining impact on her future direction and focus. This includes her time as founding CEO of the Social Entrepreneurs Network in Australia, with World Vision, AusAID, Marie Stopes International and as Executive Director of the International Women's Development Agency. Time working in the Pacific, most especially Papua New Guinea and Fiji, heightens the author's awareness of the depth of violence and injustice women and girls experience, as well as their courage, determination and resilience in working to realize their full human rights. Throughout the book, Ms. Sloane captures the rise of a global citizenship movement. She writes about the people involved, the breakthrough ideas and the activists holding ground that have contributed to this momentum for social change. There are many stories of women's human rights defenders and other individuals and organizations that have maintained the momentum for social change -- and the kinds of programs and successes that have been possible as a result. Ms. Sloane also explores what hasn't worked in terms of women's rights movement building and activism to claim and sustain their human rights. There is a parallel spirit journey throughout this book that includes fragments of diary entries, poems and conversations that give the reader a sense of Ms. Sloane's personal growth and awareness. The second half of the book focuses on the author's relocation to the United States, firstly to work for Women's World Banking in New York as Vice President of Development, and later to assume the role of Vice President of Programs with the Global Fund for Women. She arrives in New York just as the Occupy Movement is gaining ground and she documents the heady idealism of the movement at that time as well as the increasing challenges to the movement in sustaining its impact without a defined plan. The book is a touchstone for those wanting to know how to be involved in similar human rights and movement building work. What is compelling is the author's daring and effective balance between a poetic sensibility and a problem solving approach. This ability allows Ms Sloane to view issues in a broader context and she offers and documents solutions to problems that seem intractable. While the central focus of the book is about women's human rights, it's also about the wisdom of children, our dream lives and our playfulness; it's about clay making and music-making, poetry, dance and the natural world. The shape-shifting, pattern making nature of this book gives cause for optimism and hope. Its embrace of creativity, courage, community and connectivity is a potent combination. At its heart, the book is a conversation about humanity and the way we choose to live - the way that we play and dream and hope as much as what we do to work toward a just, kind and equitable world.

Jane Sloane's first book -- Citizen Jane: Transformative Citizenship in a Globalized World -- presents a truly unique and deeply important new voice in the world of global development. The book is in part a biography of Jane Sloane -- a remarkably accomplished global development professional -- part social justice missive focused on the human rights of women and girls, and also, in part, a soulful, spiritual love letter to all those in the social change field. Throughout the book, Jane weaves together a narrative that traces her own dynamic professional path concurrent with world events, social activism insights and humanitarian calls to action. Her writing is poetic, her personal story inspiring, and her voice and perspective on the global women's movement fresh, unique and very important.Often in the development arena, personal narratives and social stories are written in a way that keeps distance between the reader and author. Few development professionals write with the warmth, transparency, personal vulnerability and soulfulness that Jane brings to this book and that -- her humanity as an author and how much this saturates the book -- makes hers a rare and precious voice in a typically conservative field.
Moreover, because of her skill as a writer, Jane is able to present and explore deeply difficult topics (such as atrocious human rights violations) in a way that, unlike some other books in the genre, does not overwhelm and disempower the reader, but instead inspires and subtly calls the reader to be an agent of change and to join the global camaraderie of active, engaged, and empowered citizens from each corner of the globe rising up to meet the complexity of the world's multifaceted challenges.
Jane Sloane has written a book -- rich with wisdom, insight, vulnerability, grace, beauty, lyricism, and activism -- that is like a love letter for me as a young, spiritually-oriented social changemaker. Her honesty in tracing her journey was profoundly nourishing, equalizing, inspiring, and motivating. The fact that she has been privileged to be in so many sectors of the global social field is tremendous, but it is her insight into the nuances/needs/realities and possibilities of these fields that is truly powerful and most evident in every page of this book. Her diverse and dynamic experiences have clearly equipped her to hold issues in their vast complexity, see into the essence of the matter, and then clearly articulate the reality and the recipe needed for progress.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Jane's writing style and her enormous insight are a unique and important new voice in the global development and social justice arena and I can't wait to read what she writes next.

Citizen Jane transformative citizenship in a globalized world Jane Sloane 9780987570512 Books Reviews
Citizen Jane is a fabulous book to read. It is very personal in places and one gets an insight into the author’s private life as well as her personal challenge to make the world a better place, especially for women and children. Citizen Jane highlights what one can achieve when they put their mind to it. It is a very motivating, educational and informative book detailing the author’s many experiences and knowledge of issues impacting women worldwide. A great read for all, especially for those of us wandering what to do next and how to contribute to making the world a better place!
Citizen Jane is a wonderful book! I am so excited and inspired after reading it. Jane Sloane has had such an amazing life and her journey should be in inspiration to all of us. If you are interested in learning about how to make change and create a positive force in this world, you need to read this book. It is a guidebook for a more sustainable and loving world. The book is not only a guidebook for citizen led change, but also presents Jane's life story, telling her journey of social justice and sharing her brilliant passion for life. A must read!
This book combines compellingly well-reasoned approaches and solutions to some of the most significant and difficult social issues of today's world, with beautiful poetic insights - sun, sea, sand, rock and humanity itself seem to inspire Jane Sloane, in a way that seems as refreshingly Australian as the music of Shane Howard. Somehow she manages to retain the soft eyes of a spiritual adept along with the courage required to assist and empower downtrodden people who live in war-torn and impoverished areas of the world.
I think it's likely that this book will be recognized as a landmark work by those who endeavor to heal problems in the world that have heretofore seemed unsolvable by conventional ways of thought. The illuminating quotations by the writers and thinkers that are a part of Jane's inner world, sprinkled liberally throughout the book, were a source of continuous discovery and delight. They serve as a frequent reward for the reader's rolling up his or her sleeves and accompanying Jane on her journey on behalf of us all.
